Renting a car is one of the most convenient ways to explore Mauritius. From the beautiful coastal roads of the north to the breathtaking landscapes of Chamarel and Le Morne, having your own vehicle gives you the freedom to discover the island at your own pace.
But before collecting your rental car, there is one important question every traveller should ask:
What happens if I accidentally damage the rental car, and how much could I have to pay?
Many travellers assume that renting an insured vehicle means they will not have to pay anything if an accident occurs. However, standard car rental insurance usually includes an excess, which is the amount the customer may remain responsible for in the event of covered damage.
At Toloto Rental Services, we believe that understanding your insurance coverage should be simple and transparent.
This guide explains how car rental insurance works in Mauritius, what an insurance excess means, and how our optional Full Excess Waiver can help you enjoy your holiday with greater peace of mind.
1. What Is Car Rental Insurance?
Car rental insurance provides financial protection against certain risks associated with using a rental vehicle, such as accidents, damage and liability to third parties.
Depending on the insurance policy and rental agreement, protection may include:
- Third-party liability for injury or damage caused to others.
- Collision damage to the rental vehicle.
- Theft or loss of the vehicle.
- Other specified accidental damage.
However, having an insured rental car does not automatically mean that every type of damage is covered or that the customer has no financial responsibility.
The insurance policy, rental agreement and any optional protection purchased determine the extent of the customer’s liability.
2. What Is an Insurance Excess?
An insurance excess, sometimes called a deductible, is the amount that the customer may be required to pay towards a covered insurance claim.
At Toloto Rental Services, our standard rental excess is €700.
This means that if a customer is involved in a covered accident, they may be responsible for repair costs up to €700, depending on the actual damage and the terms of the rental agreement.
Example: How the Insurance Excess Works
Consider a rental vehicle involved in an accident resulting in Rs 130,000 of covered damage.
| Description | Amount |
|---|---|
| Total repair cost | Rs 130,000 |
| Standard insurance excess | €700 |
| Customer’s financial responsibility | €700 |
| Amount covered by the insurer | Rs 95,000 |
In this example, the customer pays €700 while the insurer covers the remaining Rs 95,000, assuming the claim is accepted and all policy conditions are met.
If the damage costs only Rs 10,000, the customer would generally be responsible for the actual Rs 10,000 repair cost rather than the full €700 excess.
3. What Is a Collision Damage Waiver (CDW)?
A Collision Damage Waiver, commonly known as CDW, is an arrangement that limits the customer’s financial responsibility if the rental vehicle is damaged in a covered incident.
Although CDW is frequently described as insurance, it is generally a contractual waiver of liability rather than a separate insurance policy purchased by the customer.
Rental companies in Mauritius offer different CDW arrangements. Some include a standard excess in the rental price, while others offer additional protection to reduce it.
At Toloto Rental Services, our standard rental excess is €700. Customers who prefer additional protection can choose our optional Full Excess Waiver.
4. What Is a Full Excess Waiver?
A Full Excess Waiver reduces the customer’s financial responsibility for covered accidental damage from the standard excess to zero.
This means that if you accidentally damage the rental vehicle in an incident covered by the waiver, you will not be required to pay the standard €700 excess.
It is important to understand that zero excess does not mean unlimited protection against every possible incident. Certain exclusions still apply, and customers must comply with the rental agreement.
Toloto Full Excess Waiver
Enjoy your holiday with greater peace of mind. Reduce your standard excess of €700 to zero for covered accidental damage.
What’s Covered?
- Accidental collision, scratches and exterior body damage.
- Windscreen, windows, mirrors and headlights.
- Accidental tyre damage and punctures.
- Roadside assistance for covered incidents, within the applicable assistance limits.
Subject to the rental agreement, applicable exclusions and incident reporting requirements.
The Full Excess Waiver is an optional protection package. Customers who prefer to retain the standard €700 excess can rent a vehicle without purchasing this additional protection.
5. Standard Insurance vs Full Excess Waiver
The following table illustrates how your financial responsibility changes when you purchase our optional Full Excess Waiver.
| Example of Covered Damage | Standard Rental | Full Excess Waiver |
|---|---|---|
| Minor body damage costing Rs 5,000 | Rs 5,000 | Rs 0 |
| Scratches and dents costing Rs 15,000 | Rs 15,000 | Rs 0 |
| Collision damage costing Rs 50,000 | €700 | Rs 0 |
| Major accident costing Rs 130,000 | €700 | Rs 0 |
| Maximum excess for covered damage | €700 | Rs 0 |
These examples assume that the incident is covered by the applicable protection, the customer has complied with the rental conditions and no exclusions apply.
With the Full Excess Waiver, Toloto absorbs the customer’s waived liability for covered damage.
The customer pays only the agreed waiver charge, rather than facing an additional excess payment for an eligible incident.
6. How Much Does Full Excess Waiver Cost?
Our Full Excess Waiver is available at €18 per rental day, with a maximum total charge of €350 per rental.
This means that customers renting a vehicle for an extended holiday can benefit from a fixed maximum protection charge.
| Rental Duration | Full Excess Waiver Cost |
|---|---|
| 3 days | €54 |
| 5 days | €90 |
| 7 days | €126 |
| 10 days | €180 |
| 14 days | €252 |
| 19 days | €342 |
| 20 days | €350 |
| 25 days | €350 |
| 30 days | €350 |
For example, a customer renting a vehicle for 14 days would pay €252 for Full Excess Waiver protection.
For a 25-day rental, the total waiver charge would be capped at €350 instead of €450.
The maximum charge applies to a continuous rental under the agreed booking conditions.
7. What Is Not Covered by Full Excess Waiver?
Although our Full Excess Waiver provides broader protection, it does not remove the customer’s responsibility to drive safely and comply with the rental agreement.
The following circumstances are excluded:
| Exclusion | Explanation |
|---|---|
| Driving under the influence | Accidents involving alcohol or drugs. |
| Unauthorised drivers | Damage caused by someone not authorised to drive under the rental agreement. |
| Deliberate damage or misuse | Intentional damage or damage resulting from prohibited use of the vehicle. |
| Lost keys | Loss or replacement of vehicle keys. |
| Misfuelling | Damage caused by using the wrong type of fuel. |
| Driving on a flat tyre | Additional damage caused by continuing to drive after a tyre has become flat or unsafe. |
| Interior damage | Burns, stains, tears and other interior damage outside the agreed protection. |
Customers must also report accidents or damage to Toloto promptly and follow the applicable accident reporting procedures.
Where a police report or other documentation is required, customers should cooperate with the reporting process.
For covered incidents, no separate damage administration charge will be imposed that effectively reinstates the waived excess.
8. Is Full Excess Waiver the Same as Travel Insurance?
No. A rental company’s excess waiver and a travel insurance policy are different forms of protection.
Some travel insurance policies include rental vehicle excess reimbursement. Depending on the policy, the traveller may need to pay the rental company first and then submit a claim to the travel insurer.
With Toloto’s Full Excess Waiver, the customer’s liability for covered damage is reduced directly to zero under the rental agreement.
| Feature | Toloto Full Excess Waiver | Travel Insurance with Rental Excess Cover |
|---|---|---|
| Provider | Toloto Rental Services | Travel insurance provider |
| Protection | Waives liability for covered damage | Reimburses eligible expenses under the policy |
| Payment after covered damage | Zero excess payable | Customer may need to pay first |
| Claims process | Handled directly with Toloto | May require a separate insurance claim |
| Exclusions | Toloto rental conditions | Travel insurance policy conditions |
Travellers who already have rental vehicle excess protection through their travel insurance should review their policy carefully before purchasing additional protection.
9. Do I Need to Pay a Security Deposit?
A security deposit and an insurance excess are not the same thing.
An excess is the amount you may be required to contribute towards covered damage.
A security deposit is a refundable amount that a rental company may collect or temporarily authorise to secure payment of obligations under the rental agreement.
Purchasing a Full Excess Waiver does not automatically mean that every possible charge is waived. Fuel differences, traffic fines, lost keys and other excluded expenses may still be payable.
At Toloto Rental Services, the applicable payment and security arrangements are communicated as part of the rental agreement.

Is Full Excess Waiver compulsory?

Does zero excess mean I will never pay for damage?
Zero excess applies to covered accidental damage only. Excluded incidents and breaches of the rental agreement may still result in additional liability.
Does Full Excess Waiver cover scratches and dents?
Yes. Accidental exterior body scratches and dents are included, subject to the protection terms.
Are tyres and windscreens included?
Yes. Our Full Excess Waiver includes accidental tyre damage, punctures and damage to the windscreen and windows, subject to the stated exclusions.
How much does Full Excess Waiver cost?
Full Excess Waiver costs €18 per rental day, with a maximum charge of €350 per continuous rental under the agreed booking conditions.
Is the €350 maximum charge refundable?
No. The waiver fee is a charge for the optional protection provided during your rental, not a refundable security deposit.
Can I purchase Full Excess Waiver after an accident?
